Professor Black-Branch is a Barrister and academic. He received a Ph.D from the University of Toronto and a D.Phil in Law from Oxford University. He is called to the Bar at Lincoln’s Inn, London and currently resides in Oxford, England.
Professor Black-Branch has had a distinguished academic career having taught at a number of institutions around the world over the years. Currently, he is Professor of International & Comparative Law at the University of Brighton and Professor of International Law at Royal Holloway, University of London and Director of Law at St Benet’s Hall, Oxford. Previously he had been Senior Law Fellow at Greyfriars Hall, Oxford University.
He conducts research in the area of International Law with an emphasis on Corporate Social Responsibility, Comparative Human Rights and Humanitarian Law (which focuses on the laws of war). In 2007 he was invited to partake in the American Bar Association Conference Section of International Law on "Sovereignty and Humanity in International Law" held at Oriel College, Oxford. He presented a paper entitled: Military Might versus Humanitarian Catastrophe: The Legal Status of Cluster Munitions under International Law. Also at the American Bar Association Conference he was the discussant responding to a paper by Professor Sir Nigel Rodley, Member of the UN Human Rights Committee and former UN Special Rapporteur on Torture under International law.
Professor Black-Branch chaired a panel on the International Criminal Court in Tripoli, Libya. The Conference was entitled the Permanent International Criminal Court: Ambition, Reality and Future Prospects.
Currently, he is a member of the International Nuclear Law Association (INLA) in Brussels and is the Chairman of Committee on Nuclear Capacity, Non-Proliferation and Contemporary International Law of the International Law Association.
Professor Black-Branch received the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal "For worthy and devoted services to the community." An honour for which he is extremely proud.
