Competition & Strategy I

The role of the “General Manager” in the modern business organization is complex, to say the least. In fact, the person filling this job must play many roles. These include entrepreneur, business strategist, organizational designer, financial controller, leader – and perhaps even “junior psychologist”! Given this wide range of responsibility, it is easy to see why so few people are exceptionally good in the position of general manager of the firm.

The overview that will be presented in the opening session of the CBA program will explore these multiple roles of the manager, and attempt to show how their coordination into a coherent set of values, policies, and strategies are necessary if the organization is to achieve its goals and objectives—and to accomplish its basic business mission. As well, we will also provide a critical focus on the leadership role of the general manager, and how that person transforms the organization when it needs to change in the face of new market realities.
